The Treasures of the Toho:

If you've found this part of our web site, it means that you've been poking around on the Toho Maru and located the treasure. This area is not generally advertised, since some people object to the taking of artifacts from wrecks. Personally I feel these little touches of history should be shared, and I mean no indignity to the memories of those that died on the wreck. If they are not recovered now, they will be lost forever as the wreck continually collapses. I have recovered these articles and they are on display in my house.

There are a number of bottles and plates to be found scattered around the wreck. There used to be an area called the bottle room, however, this has since collapsed as has much of the wreck in the last 10 years.

There are many bottles to be found on the Toho Maru. Medicine bottles and Sake bottles in blue (above) or beer bottles in brown (above right). Were the Japanese so fond of beer, or were the bottles used to carry something else? Malaria was a scourge during the war, and I believe that the bottles were used to carry insect repellant, There are huge numbers of them! One bottle has the following script:-

which translated means "Trade Mark"

Kirin Beer

hence the KB logo.

Most of the beer bottles carry the words DAINIPPON BREWERY CO., LTD., and have a Japanese logo.

The plates (middle) carry the company crest of the Kaiun shipping company and on the back the words

KIKUSUI SEITOSHO

This translates to hard china from the famous Kikusui potteries.
