July - December 2006 Race Results

The monthly races contribute towards a six-monthly prize based on fastest times and handicap. The handicap favours those that improve their times but, in a change of tradition, no points were awarded this series for laying the course. Congratulations to the winners, the long-suffering time-keepers and to all those that took part.

The Piasau Boat Club has already published its 2007 calendar. We should ensure that our own events do not clash with theirs.

Thursday 7th December 2006:  E1 Loops

Too many competing activities to expect a large turn-out, however, the aficionados that appreciate a fast course were there and the records fell. Kelvin went sub-19 at 18:59, and Nicole Rijks slashed three minutes off her previous PB of 31 minutes something. Newcomer Fabrice came close to running a sub-20 'elite' time.

Thanks for turning up, and thanks as always to the timers, Anna and Hanneke.

The 5km race is 4¾ laps of E1 (hence the lack of a map!). Please park at the finish opposite E1/3. The start is around E1/25. The 10 km race will start at 5.15pm and the 5 km race at 5.30pm.

For the July - December 2006 race series, it has been decided that the runner who sets the course will NOT receive any extra handicap points. No race charges until 2007!!

Farewell to the Cooks

Jotina (Judy) Cook left PANAS for Australia a month back and the absence of her husband Steve, our ex-treasurer, lead us to assume that he too had departed. Apparently not. Steve turned up on Friday 1st December, not to run (he's just received some leg surgery) but to say farewell.

Steve and Judy represented the entire concept of PANAS. They turned up nearly every Monday and Friday at the Beach Shelter, raced each month, and if injured, helped with the timing. Judy was one of our fastest ladies and won and a handful of race cups and medals. Steve, less fleet of foot, made up for it with his characteristic determination. He even smiles on this picture from the 'Back O'Smarts' run in July.

We'll always remember that after the run, when we said farewell to Jason and Sam, Judy sang a Zimbabwean lament that moved even strong 10 km runners to tears.

All the best Steve and Judy for your future in Australia.

Thursday 2nd November 2006:

Russ's 700  (the old Beach Splash)

An excellent turn-out of 33 runners was provided courtesy of John Costello's Gurkha troops who showed us all that there is no such thing as a slow course!

We wish them success in their forthcoming Army championships.

Thanks as always to the timers Anna, Steve, Anthony and Justin Peer, one of our old runners who has returned to say farewell to Brunei, and to Paul for laying the course.

The next race will be the E1 loops on Thursday 7th December, meanwhile get ready for the Panaga Triathlon 12th November and the Piasau Triathlon on the 25th November.

Meet at the Panaga Club Beach Shelter. The 10 km race will start at 5.15pm and the 5 km  race at 5.30pm. The course will be run either clock-wise or anti-clockwise depending on the wind direction.

For the July - December 2006 race series, it has been decided that the runner who sets the course will NOT receive any extra handicap points. No race charges until 2007!!

Saturday 14th October 2006:  Piasau Half Marathon Relay

What a fantastic turn-out of 250 runners and walkers whose presence helped raise over MYR 6000 for charity. PANAS, BLNG, Panaga school and many other supporters and runners from Brunei joined the Piasau fun-runners for this annual event.

Registering in the sun gave the early runners a taste of what the 2 km run-in on the beach would feel like. It was indeed desperately hot for the first couple of laps and Kelvin, who ran the first two legs of the relay, dismissed our slogan "You make running fun" as gross miss-representation. One leg was enough for me; many congratulations to those who ran more than one leg, and particularly to Ray Skinner and Wong (ex-PANAS runner) who completed the half-marathon solo!

Callum MacDonald tore round the 3 km lap in a time that caught his team-mates by surprise, and Bengi ran the last two legs bringing home the "Fleetfoot Mac" team in her first ever 8 km race. "Fleetfoot Mac" won the best team name, but this event was not just about winning (although some teams might deny this), it was about taking part and raising money for a good cause.

After running was over and the heat of the day and heat of the runners had dissipated, the serious task of re-hydration  was enjoyed until late in the evening.

The PANAS livery stands out clearly in the crowds.

Results: We came 5th, 6th, 17th and 18th out of 35 teams: Well done!!

Thanks for coming along all you runners and supporters, and many thanks to Paul Kelly and his team of organisers for such an enjoyable event.
We even recruited some PANAS 'groupies'. Who said we'd never get Sylvia to run with PANAS!

Thursday 5th October 2006:  Norwegian's Would

This traditionally fast route proved slow for most tonight in heavy, sultry conditions. The haze was obviously effecting the brain as three runners (two of them professional mappers) got lost on the simplest course of the year!

Congratulations again to Heather Buchan on a PB, and welcome to John Costello, fresh (?) from the Kinabalu Climbathon who tore down the first 5 km of the 10 km route in under 19 minutes. He then got lost but found Chairman Paul. In John's words "I lost my momentum so ambled back and chatted with Paul." A serious runner is John!!

This was Judy Cook's last PANAS race. In a few weeks, she'll leave Brunei and we'll all miss her unique presence on our monthly runs and twice weekly jogs. We wish her well back in Australia.

A special mention must be made to the runners who turned up during their fasting month. If you've not tried it, you won't believe how tired you get, especially just before sunset when we run.

Thanks to all that turned up and to Hanneke and Anna for timing. See you next month at Russ's 700.

Tuesday 12th September 2006: The Steve Drake Run

What a great turn-out for this annual event that also happened to be my birthday! There were many more runners than the list suggests and we had more time-keepers than ever before!

Congratulations to Nicole and Heather for personal best times (on their first PANAS races) and to Hanneke, Steve Cook and rather a large cast of non-runners for the timing.

A big thank you to Anna for preparing all the food for the traditional après-run bash.

This circuit was designed as a likeness to the running shoe of Steve Drake, the man who was Mr. PANAS for so many years. Two years ago at the inauguration of this run we said farewell to him. The run starts from the back of F1/28. There is limited car parking there, however, round the front of F1/28, use the driveways of houses F1/24, F1/24A and F1/25 if they are still unoccupied.

As usual, the 10km run will start at 5.15 pm prompt and the 5km run at 5.30 pm. After the run, there will be a bit of a party and refreshments, nibbles and cakes will be provided. Remember NO RACE CHARGES until the end of the year!

Sunday 10th December 2006:  Brunei Marathon

Sunday 20th August 2006

Half Marathon at the Mumong Sports Complex.

Congratulations to Paul Gavaghan, Frank van Doorn, Judy Cook and Liz den Boer who represented PANAS at this event.

Wednesday 9th August 2006: Garrison Loops

This circuit, once famous for its fast times (largely because it was only 4.75 km) has been re-designed since the new Ghurkha Quarters have been built across part of it! The re-design, however, is still only 4.86 km but this time we have adjusted the times accordingly to normalise at 5km.

Well done Paul, who tested the club's new first aid kit after falling at the first corner, but recovering to win the 10km and overall as well.

The Jan-July 2006 trophies were awarded to the applause of a rather a small crowd this month, however, the extraordinary wind and rain that preceded the run may have put off a few runners!

Good Luck to Liz, Judy, Frank and Paul in the forthcoming half marathon.

Tuesday 4th July 2006: Back O'Smarts

Jason & Sam's Farewell Run

Back O'Smarts has been re-designed for speed and simplicity, not to mention a small farewell party afterwards. It was a hot start to the race enlivened by the absence of stop-watches, nevertheless, the runs got off just a few minutes late, and in the very hot conditions, I don't think anybody objected too much.

We said farewell to Jason and Sam. A sad and poignant moment that will stay in our memories as Judy Cook, in African tradition, sang a farewell lament. Jason has done a great job as Chairman for the last two years and will be sorely missed as will Sam as regular PANAS runners.

Paul Gavaghan will take over as Chairman. Anybody familiar to the site will know that Paul is not just a regular runner, but more often than not, the winner of the monthly race. Thanks very much Paul.

Jason, Bengi, Paul and John, the incoming and present committee.

Wann (left above) on the way to another excellent       time, and Garrison Tim (middle) showing that you don't have to look like a skeleton with quadriceps to be a fast runner; and it was his third exercise of the day! Jason finishes his last 5 km after two years as Chairman.

Jason practices his cheerful cockney smile in preparation for London.

The start of the 10 km, with Paul (yet again) pulling out at 25 metre lead in the first 30 metres. Dollah shows a very consistent and deceptively fast pace. Judy and Judy finish the 10 km under very hot conditions.

Congratulations to Paul Gavaghan

who takes over from Jason Taylor as the Chairman of the PANAS Committee.

The committee, runners and friends of PANAS would like to thank Jason for his great contribution to the club over the last two years.

I love the picture on the right, it actually captured, in January 2005, so many of the 10 km PANAS stalwarts:- Kim Rutten, Judy Leslie, Hanneke and Jaap-Erik van Krimpen, Jason Taylor and Anna Elder (the perpetual timer). Paul, as usual, was moving too fast for the camera shutter!

Monday 18th June 2006:

Many thanks to Uli, PANAS papparazi

Monday 5th June 2006: Maulana Pursuits

A turn out of 18 runners was not bad for this unpopular course. Why do we run it? Should we have an annual pursuit race? Should we have it here? What do you think? Please contact me on annjohn47@hotmail.com with your suggestions. Nevertheless, some good times in hot and smoky conditions were recorded, although those sticklers for precision might argue the length of the course, however, it is a well-known defect of the GPS to under-read on important races. However, bucking the worldwide trend of litigation and recrimination, we'll simply accept the results as they stand and congratulate all those who took part.

The monthly race will start from X2. This race is unusual in that a staggered start is arranged at minute intervals, the slowest runners setting off first. Those running 5km in >30 minutes start at 5.30pm, those that run in < 20 mins at 5.40pm. There will be a normal 10 km route starting at 5.15 pm.

To find the start, turn into Jalan Pandan Lapan from Jalan Maulana at the X2/X3 boundary. After 300 metres turn left into a estate of apartment blocks and quickly turn left again. Park by the park.

Panaga Children's Aquathon 2006

First of all you have to get up at an hour I never knew existed, then swim several lengths of the pool and THEN run around the Padang whilst being screamed at by your impartial parents, who are doubling as timers and marshals. The plus side is lots of food afterwards and prizes presented by the kindly old gentlemen. Thanks very much to the organisers (Daddy's friends), the marshals (Mummy's friends) and all those who participated (my friends). The whole affair was conducted in the best of sporting traditions, with the little girl in blue about to beat her arguing colleague over her head with a chair. But at the end, it's all good friends and fun, and that's what these competitions are all about.

               Well Done Everybody  (Results)

Friday 5th May 2006:  Jason's Clinical run

There's nothing like a 5 km race of 4,880 metres to produce good times! Those with a penchant for accuracy will have noticed that the 5 km times have been increased in direct proportion to the shortfall in distance of the race. Many thanks to the timers and course setters who stood in at short notice due to the absence of the regular bodies.

This run will start from the F9 - Supasave Road junction, the same place as last month, right by the monsoon drain. 10 km starts at 5.15pm and the 5 km race at 5.30pm. This is a track designed for speed rather than the jungle jaunt of the last three races. Basically, the 5km runners run to the Clinic, around the Doctors' car park island and back. The 10 km runners do the same, but start 120 metres into the course (opposite F9/23). On returning from the clinic, they then run two laps of Norwegian's Would.

Sunday 13th August 2006:  The 1st Brunei National Triathlon

Brunei Darussalam will be holding its very first national Triathlon on Sunday, 13th August at the Serasa Water Sport Complex. The Triathlon is organised by the Department of Youth and Sports with the coordination from Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation, Brunei Darussalam Amateur Swimming Association and Brunei Darussalam Amateur Athletics Association. Forms can be obtained at Department of Youth and Sport, 6th Floor or at the department’s branches in Tutong, Belait and Temburong. Closing date for registration is 13th July.

Sunday 23rd April 2006: London Marathon

Many congratulations to Francis Clayton, who finished the London Marathon yesterday in an excellent time of 3 hours 35 minutes. He wore the blue on yellow PANAS running vest for the event, and we look forward to some more detailed photos of Francis at the marathon.

Tuesday 4th April 2006: Monthly Race

The BSRC Super-8

We've not run this course for two years. A Steve Drake innovation, this interesting run covers tarmac, cycle paths, sand and grass tracks, the highlight being the crossing of the Seria River on a plank bridge on two occasions. The track is sensitive to rain, and this dictates a February, March or early April schedule. Last year, drilling activities intervened, and this year, we were nearly scuppered, being on the edges of the KB cloud burst yesterday, however, good weather today dried out the course.

Roger McIlroy (on his first PANAS race), pointed out a hazard for taller runners, that being overhanging branches on the bridge. Look out. We'll cut them away before the next race.

The Kelvin / Wann battle was won this month by Kelvin in a very impressive 19:05.

Best wishes from PANAS for Francis Clayton who will run in the London Marathon at the end of the month.

Thanks to the timers and race organisers, but most of all Yourselves for coming along and joining in.

PANAS  Annual General Meeting

& Mad March Mile

Wednesday 15th March

The small turn-out for this event was caused by the depredations of the MD's fun-run in the morning and the outbreak of HFMD. Sadly, no children could join the run, so a bunch of 10 runners left the Beach Shelter for the Mad March Mile. By the time we reached the start, our numbers had grown to 12. For the first time in four years, the adults actually raced and the mile was won by Tim Davies (5:55 mins), followed by Kelvin Eden (6:02) and Eko (6:10). Judy Leslie was 4th and the first lady back in 6:31.

The AGM followed and small changes to the committee were effected. We are very pleased to welcome Bengisu Koksaloglu as Treasurer, whilst Kelvin Eden will attempt to unravel the arcane mysteries of the PANAS results spreadsheet. Jason Taylor would like to stand down as Chairman, but will continue until a candidate is found.

It's funny. If you look at the committees across the Panaga Club, the same names keep re-appearing, and all this at a time when the community is expanding so fast, that newcomers are being housed in Temburong!

Thursday 2nd March 2006: Monthly Race

The Billion Barrel River Run

A brilliant turn-out despite the absence of at least half a dozen regulars. Great time by Lee, but otherwise, the soft sand on the beach tended to make for a slower run than normal, although nobody told Kelvin and Aizuddin.

Many thanks to the timers who had a difficult job positioned where they were close to the bridge. Next time we'll re-jig the start and finish lines. A big thanks to Peter Tay who attended to Judy Cook's ankle. Apparently she hopped the last two kilometres home to win the ladies' 5km race.

Events coming thick and fast at this time of year. Look out for the 1st Brunei Triathlon in August and the 2nd Brunei Marathon in 2006 sometime.

Piasau Fun Run Calendar

Meanwhile, on our home turf comes the

1st Kiddies Aquathon

Sunday 14th May 2006

The Panaga Athletics Section presents the First Kiddies Aquathon

The event will take place at the Panaga Club Pool & Padang

Cost B$5 p.p., including breakfast, drinks & prizes.

Contact William.MacDonald@Shell.com for more details, or watch this space!

Miri 10 Miles

What a fantastic result for the PANAS women! Congratulations to Judy and Susan (1st and 3rd in the 10 miles) and to Bengi, Ellen and Liz (top three positions) in the 5km race.

7th February 2006: Monthly Race - Jungle Loops

For a slow route (that even attracted some Hashers), there was an excellent turn-out of 28 runners. Fears of marauding wild boars proved unfounded, and Wann just pipped Kelvin to the line after a hard race across the grassy last stage. Perhaps Kelvin would get better grip if his feet touched the ground!

The start (below) reveals that if, like Judy and Wann, you want to win, a dynamic start is essential! Milliseconds count at this level of competition and apparently, not everybody trusts the timekeepers.

11th January 2006: Monthly Race - Old Camp Course

Happy New Year and welcome to the first race of the season. Each year is split into two halves with a race in each month. Prizes are awarded at the end of six months for ladies and men in the 5km, 5km handicap and 10km races.

Willy MacDonald shows the 'before and after' effects of a good run in the tropics. Like many top athletes these days, Willy carries a GPS receiver (right wrist), MP3 player (both ears) and a heart monitor (it's not a bra - honest.) I guess it's towing along the portable generator  that holds him back!

Congratulations to Wann (number 1 - right), who won his first 5km race with PANAS. We expect him to join the 'Steve Drake' Elite runners who can clock under 20 minutes on his next outing! Commiserations to Masri who got a bit lost in F2 on the way back from the 10km race. He follows a magnificent tradition, since in the first ever PANAS race, more than half the field got lost!
