Thursday 6th December

The December time trial was held in E1, Panaga. Each loops measures 1.05 km, although there was some dispute on the distance as some measurements lead to 1.06 km. The 10 km runners had to go around 9.55 times. It’s a fast course as can be seen by the fastest time of sub 18:30. Perhaps this can be beaten next year when we re-measure the course and establish one lap equals 1.06 km instead of 1.05 km!

The 27th Panaga Triathlon was held on Sunday, 11th November. It was is an event in which competitors, competed in three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running.

As for previous triathlons, the events were: full triathlon (men), full triathlon (women), full triathlon (mixed team), mini triathlon (men) and mini triathlon (women).

The full triathlon involves a 500 m pool swim, followed by a 28 km cycle ride and then finishes with a 5 km run. The mini triathlon has a 300 m pool swim, a 14 km cycle and a 2.5 km run. For the team event, also held over the full distance, you can have one person doing the swim, another one doing the cycle, and a third person doing the run. A stipulation for the team event is that all teams will be mixed – having at least one male and one female in the team.

Special thanks to the Panas triathlon organizing committee in particular Jaap-Erik, who couldn’t compete this time because of his organizing efforts, Kelvin who despite his hard organizing work this week did his usual cycling time extra-ordinaire, Bengi for her financial work, Hanneke for her usual dedicated support and ALL MARSHALLS for getting up at 5:30 on Sunday and making this one of the best organized sports events I have ever participated in.

This Sunday you made all of us winners.

The PANAS race this month is named after Steve Drake, Mr. PANAS for so many years, who maintained the ethic of running for everybody. PANAS welcomes runners of all abilities. The whole point is to turn up and get some exercise.

Tuesday 6th November 2007:

The modified Steve Drake Run

Modified indeed, as yet another bridge collapse scuppered one of our traditional courses (along with the BSRC Super 8 and Jungle Loops). A great turn-out of 29 runners saw some excellent times and lead to rumours of a 'tuned' course. Not so! A detailed audit by TSM revealed the course to be 4,998.75 metres long, so rather than add 5 milliseconds to everybodys' time, we'll leave them as stands. Let's just put the times down to cool weather and the anticipation of the refreshments to follow.

PANAS said farewell to John and Anna Elder. John, along with Francis and Peter, was a PANAS founder member in 1993. His time of 23:22 shows an annual increase of 0.77% per annum which is better than the norm of 1%, but a deterioration none the less. Alas for hopes of eternal youth! Anna, along with Hanneke, has been the PANAS timer for six years. This is a record in itself.

Congratulations to all who recorded personal bests and thanks to everybody for turning up and keeping the ethic of PANAS alive.

Thursday 18th October 2007: New PANAS Secretary

The committee are delighted to announce that Jan-Willem Verkaik will take over from John Elder as PANAS secretary.

Saturday 6th October 2007

Well done to our three teams. It's supposed to be a charity event for fun, however, once the old competitive juices start flowing I think we all forgot that. Anyway, PANAS took 2nd and 3rd places overall (Cathy, Francis and Kelvin  followed by  Jan-Willem and Axel) and even Team Turtle (John, Brian and Liz) came about half-way up the field. Due to faulty electronics on Herbert's BMW (is that ironic or what !?) Brian had to run 8 km and suffered a near-death experience. Turtle heroine Liz followed Brian as the blistering afternoon heat dissipated and finished as cool as she started >

Willy MacDonald receives his pewter only four months late; the best dressed team and the happiest overseas competitors ! Many thanks to the organisers of this excellent charity event. We're looking forward to next year.

Thursday 4th October 2007: Russ's 700*

This was a PANAS first; the counter-rotating race, with the 10 km runners going anti-clockwise and the 5 km runners clockwise. It was more sociable since we met each other twice during the race.

A good field of 18 runners turned up, some obviously taking it easy prior to the coming weekend's Piasau Half-Marathon Relay and the alternative Lambir Ball Breaker.

It was Anna Elder's last stint as timer having been PANAS's regular monthly timer since 2002. Many thanks to Anna and to Hanneke van Krimpen the other timer who looks set for another two years (at least) of timing. Well done ladies!

The direction around this course depends on the wind direction. A SW'erly wind is predicted so we'll start eastwards along the beach to the E10 ramp. Over the ramp around beam-pump (nodding donkey) #700, right back along the sand track to E9, left cut to the Jalan Utura cycle track that we all know so well and back to the Beach Shelter.

*Russ Peterson was a keen PANAS runner who never let his more than muscular build interfere with his attempts to run the 5 km race. Beam Pump 700, the landmark of this race was his nemesis. This expensive pump, for which he was the PT, failed on the first stroke as the connecting rod parted and dropped the whole gubbins down the hole. The well never recovered and neither did Russ ! A great trier at all sports, read about Russ's exploits:- (1) and (2).

Tuesday 4th September 2007:  Garrison Loops

Of all our routes, this is the most precisely measured and is, exactly, 5 kilometres. Fortunately, late in the afternoon, clouds moved in after a scorching day and the running conditions were good on this tarmac course of many right-angles (and left-angles).

A crop of very good times saw personal bests for Jan-Willem, Liz and Nicole, and I suspect that Philip has not run so fast for along time.

Well done to all who turned up and once again thanks to Hanneke and Anna, the timers.

The next monthly race is a road run around the Gurkha residential area and the NAAFI. Meet at the H13/H14 bridge. The 10 km race will start at 5.15 pm and the 5 km race at 5.30 pm.

Thursday 9th August 2007:  Camp and Ramp

Before the race, the runners get atuned to the conditions or their I-Pods.

Frank, Herbert, Jan-Willem, John, Liz, Tarmizi (in car), Tak, Francis, Brad, Zofian, Zaimuddin

At this holiday time of year, a dozen participants is not a bad turn-out. Once again, if you weren't there, you missed a good run! Particularly sweaty conditions took its toll on those runners that had recently been afflicted with a singularly nasty cold virus that is sweeping the camp. Otherwise it was great to see some returning runners, and first time with PANAS, Jan-Willem Verkaik. Barely off the 'plane from Sakhalin, one feels that JW is potentially a 19 minute man!

Many thanks to Anna, Natalie and Charlotte for timing and to Francis and Paul for setting the course. Francis who designed the course and his wife Jan hosted a sumptuous makan after the race.

Francis Clayton had developed this new masterpiece that will start and finish from F2/8. Once again, the course will trade outright speed for scenery as runners can enjoy the camp roads, two rivers, the beach and an 'off piste' section across the Panaga Padang. The 10 km runners will start and finish with a 2.5 km 'lollipop' loop. The 10km race will start at 5.20 pm and the 5km race at 5.30 pm prompt.

Farewell to stalwart Brad, newly married and on his last PANAS race

Odd PANAS fact: Four people out of the timers and runners were married within the last couple of months!!!

Thursday 12th July 2007:  The Billion Barrel River Run

An afternoon of rain and stormy winds obviously persuaded runners to stay indoors which was a shame since they missed a great course in lovely running conditions.

The course was re-designed at the last minute since the Seria River's SW monsoon course would have made for more of a Duathlon than most would have preferred!

Despite not being a fast course, Bengi's times just get better and better, shame about the eyesight! Welcome to Tak on her first run.

The course was 5.1 km and all times have been pro-rated

For the third time this year, we will try to run the Billion Barrel Seria River Run. There have been other changes to the monthly race calendar and in August, a new route, Francis Clayton's 'Camp & Ramp' course will be run. Check out the new schedule and please let friends without email and internet access know about the changes.

The 10 km race will start at 5.15 pm and the 5 km race at 5.30 pm.

Tuesday 5th June 2007:  Norwegians' Would

Thursday 10th May:  Monthly Race - Back O'Smarts

A good turn-out of 20 runners ran this fast 5 km course and it looks like a number of personal bests were achieved; well done!

Zofian and Nicole showed the benefits of regular PANAS running whilst Fabrice and Lindsay just get better and better as they get used to the climate. Bengi, no doubt inspired by her forthcoming holiday, ran an excellent 24 minutes and hosted a most enjoyable get together afterwards.

Many thanks to the timers, now in their sixth year of timing !!

Like last year, we'll run the Jason and Sam farewell version of this race starting from G9/42. The 10km race will start at 5.15 pm and the 5 km race at 5.30 pm. After the race there will be refreshments to celebrate the beginning of summer (or something).

Sunday 6th May:  26th Panaga Triathlon

Well done to all those that took part and many thanks to the organisers and marshals.

Thursday 5th April 2007: Norwegian's Would

The planned Billion Barrel Seria River Run was postponed due to no rain and miles of soft sand. Nevertheless, a dozen runners turned up for the Norwegian's Would run, in fact, they were almost outnumbered by the timekeepers (right) who could well have been mistaken for a group of street hawkers.

Fabrice burnt off the first 2.5 km lap of the 5 km course in under nine minutes and returned a highly impressive 19:13. Alan Balsdon was barely slower on the first stage of the 10 km at 10 minutes dead. Welcome to newcomers Peter and Lindsay and back luck to Axel, professional map maker, who got lost in the F2 / F3 jungle.

Tuesday 6th March 2007:  Garrisand Loops

Despite all our precautions about the weather, it was Joe Shell and John Bull that finally forced us to develop a new course "The Garrisand Loops".  Military exercises and the demise of the Seria River bridge saw us run a combination of the old Jungle Loops and Garrison Loops. But not all of us. At that critical 3 km stage, when the oxygen supply to the brain is dwindling, a number of runners missed a critical 950 metre stage. Nevertheless, all times have been normalised to 5 km or 10 km. Liz was a bit unfairly represented since her 7.1 km was normalised down to 5 km at a pace that far more represented 10 km.

In principle this should be the Jungle Loops course, however, due to very wet weather, we'll run the modified Garrison Loops course if the going is damp. Final decision will be by course inspection on the day. As always, the 10 km race will start at 5.15 pm and the 5 km race at 5.30 pm.

Friday 2nd March 2007:  MAD MARCH MILE and AGM

As is traditional, the AGM was preceded by the Mad March Mile. At 5.30 pm, 30 runners including an excellent turn-out of kids, walked eastwards a mile along the beach. Every year it's the same. About 10 minutes into the walk somebody will ask "Isn't this a mile yet?" A mile is a long way, 1.609344 km to be precise, that nearly takes you to the E9/E10 ramp! It was also hot, humid and airless, the NE monsoon having temporarily died away. At 5.56 pm, we reached the mile marker and the children started the long race back. At 6.01 pm, the adults then followed. Nobody likes running a mile. It's far too long to sprint and not long enough to get settled, nevertheless we all made it, although Jasmijn and Sylvia seemed to take longer on the race than the walk.

The results were:-

1)  Diederik Scholten  9:27

2)  Ben Strickland     9:37

3)  Intan Dols        10:55

DSC00186x.jpg (74993 bytes)   DSC00183x.jpg (67331 bytes)

DSC00188x.jpg (41046 bytes)

On a slow course Kelvin Eden ran 5:50 minutes despite waiting for the kids to finish, closely followed by Paul Gavaghan in 6:00 minutes dead.

Again, following tradition, the AGM was held by the Beach Shelter. The details can be downloaded, but in short, the previous minutes and treasurer's report were approved, and the committee returned unopposed. It was the largest AGM turn-out for years and lowered the existing record for brevity to six minutes! Previous minutes can be down-loaded here and the minutes of this AGM here.

A vote of thanks was given to the timers, those that set the courses, and most of all to the adults and children that came along and took part.

5th February 2007:  Norwegians' Would

A good turn-out of 24 runners saw Fabrice displace our Chairman, Paul, from number one slot in the 10km race. It had to happen sooner or later as Fabrice got acclimatised to PANAS. Mind you, Paul's giving him more than two decades of a head start here.

It was great to see Jason back on a visit. Heather yet again came close to breaking the 30 minute barrier and Linda came up with the most novel excuse for not running; "My Amah forgot to pack my shoes!"

The Jul - Dec 2006 awards were presented.

We have changed the date for this race from Thursday 8th February to Monday 5th February. Due to the extremely wet conditions (FYI, last month was the fourth wettest January in the last 50 years), the planned route of Jungle Loops is un-runable and we will instead meet at the F6/F7 boundary road to run the 'Norwegians' Would' circuit. The 10 km race will start at 5.15pm and the 5 km race at 5.30pm.

The monthly run schedule has been changed since the BSRC Super 8 race has been cancelled for safety reasons (the Sungei Seria wooden bridge has partially collapsed).

9th January 2007:  Old Camp Course

The first ever PANAS 5km run in April 1993 was held here. In the old days (1993 - 95), this was the only course we ever ran and traditionally, it now kicks off the year's series of races.

Cool, good running conditions revealed who had, and who had not over-indulged at Christmas!

Thanks to all those that turned up, to the time-keepers Anna and Hanneke and to Paul for laying the course. The torrential rain during the award ceremony is simply a feature of the time of year.

Congratulations to Hans on winning a foot-massage and a small kitten.
