January's OLD CAMP COURSE
saw a turn out of 15 people.
Fabrice, burdened by an injury,
came close to his old self with a
very respectable sub 20 minute
time. Jeremy was his consistent
self again with 22+ minute 5 km
run and Paul did well with
slightly over 44 minutes on a
consumption of beer and
dinner training over Christmas!

Panaga Athletics Association
Tuesday 5th February CAMP & 'CAMP'
Francis and Jan hosted the event since they will
soon be leaving for Canada where Francis is
looking forward to running with snowshoes. The
food was good, and so were the drinks.

The course was measured with Francis' bike &
speedometer. The beach was still inaccessible
and therefore Francis & Paul made a lolly pop
around E1 and at F4. The course was given the
name: "Camp & Camp".

Axel & Fabrice decided to bank on the 10 km.
Their competitive nature was so strong that they
sprinted the last bit to the finish. Uli, who was there
to take his usual smart pictures had to be
commissioned to make the picture for the photo
finish. A nipt advantage of Axel put him in the
winner's position!

Thanks to Uli for taking the pictures, Jan & Francis
for hosting, Jeannette for timekeeping and Robert
who supported the timekeeping and gave cheers
to all runners. Robert is a promising re-joiner of
PANAS just arrived from Aberdeen.

Friday 7th March, Norwegian's Would
The March monthly run saw a good turnout considering
the torrential rain. Norwegian's Would is known as a fast
course.
Jan-Willem, who had measured the course thought he
knew better than his predecessor John Elder and
under-estimated the 5 km run by 2%. Also, due to a
mishap with the 10 km map reading, this course was
actually 2.7% shorter. JW, who ran the 10 km must have
thought he could get away cheaply here with some free
meters. Watch that man! Times shown are the corrected
times, i.e. 5 km runners were faster than their recorded
times and 10 km runners were slower. For uncorrected
times click
here.

We saw some fast times here due to the relative
coolness and also Ben, Lesley, Louis and Poul were
having their first timetrials. Extremely good
performances of all.

Bengi, Axel, Fabrice and Kelvin who all suffer from
injuries came to support the runners. Their presence
must be another reason we saw such good times.

Thanks to Paul for laying out the course and to
Jeannette for the timekeeping in the rain. Finally,
congratulations to Lesley for, literally, going the extra
mile. She was so focused that she missed the turn-off
point. In true tradition she got lost on her first Panas
timetrial!
Friday 29 March, Mad March Mile & AGM
The Mad March Mile saw a turnout
of some 20 children with their
parents and other Panas regulars.
A great turnout considering the
rain!

Hanneke & Jeannette looked after
the timekeeping. Congratulations
to all kids. Ruth (see the picture to
right) ran an awesome time. She is
a newcomer and beat the fastest
adults that night.

As you can see, some kids took
the easy option. Perhaps we need
to organise the Mad March 100
meter next year Jeremy?!

A General Meeting was held
and the salient points of the
meeting were:
-Periodic morning runs, first one
scheduled for 28 April.
-One speedtraining per month.
-Postpone the May Triathlon till
later this year.

Special thanks to Uli for the
pictures. More at

Friday 17th April, Beach Splash
There was a good representation of runners at the Beach Splash. By
special request the 10 km was made to go into the camp, so the
runners wouldn't get too bored by having to run a 2nd lap. Paul
Gavaghan laid out the course effectively and nobody got lost.

There was some fatigue in most of us, perhaps caused by the flu bug
and the MD fun run last week, which some of us made into a race.

Despite the fatigue and a tough beach part we saw some excellent
times. Fabrice took 19:21 and Kelvin was just short of a sub 20 minute
time. Bernhard joined for the first time and one would imagine that this
man could be hitting the 19 minute mark sooner or later. Jan-Willem
ran slower than the last 10 km. Watch this man, one would bet he
couldn't manage to sneak a short-cut this time!

Ruth, who was on a break from school in the UK and joined us earlier
at the Mad March Mile did very well with 21:15. Would she be breaking
the 21 minutes during her next visit?
Friday 23rd May, Back 'O Smarts
Back O'Smarts (click here to see map) is known as a fast course, but
the day was hot and there were holes in the pavement that runners
had to negotiate. Paul set an excellent time of 42:52 and three runners
run sub 20 minutes on the 5 km.
As usual, thanks to Paul for laying the course and to Hanneke and
Jeannette for the timekeeping. Snacks and drinks were provided by
Bengi and greatly appreciated after a hot run.
Monday 5th May, SPEED TRAINING riddle

Speed training (previously unreported) was introduced by special
request from Herbert. Unfortunately Herbert couldn't be there himself
on the day. However, all participants can testify that the 5th May
session was a great event, truly worth repeating every Monday!

Join us for the next one!
Friday June 6th, Billionth Barrel Monument Run
The Billionth Barrel monument run is a difficult course, as can be seen by the twist and turns on the map. Still the times were good as you can see from the
fast times below.
Tuesday 8th July, Camp & Ramp
This classic run started from Kelvin's
house at F1. After the event Kelvin and
Rosemary had kindly organised nice dips
and marvelously cool drinks. They tasted
good- even after a bike ride. Below table
shows the times (everyone did 5 km,
except for Paul and Judy, who did their
usual double).

Paul announced the prize winners of last
6 months. Some newcomers were doing
well in the handicap and also some old
hands were still doing well in the fastest
times! Zammudin, Robert and both M. &
Mme. Petrissans couldn't be there, they
are still owed a trophee with their name
engraved!
Friday 15th August, Beach Splash
The Beach Splash saw an unexpected good turnout despite the Summer holiday.
People were happy with their times, and there was some gossip that the course
might have been somewhat shorter than 5 km. Alas, we will never know since
nobody was willing to measure the distance with his race bike on the beach!

Fabrice did his typical 19 minute time on the 5 km and Bernhard set a great PB of
19:32. So did Peter. Zamudin was his consitent self and Mugsith joined us as well.
One would think we can expect some sub 20 minute times from Mugsith. The whole
Bourne family came for a visit and youngsters Ruth and George set impressive
times.

Dollah did well on the 10 km. He was helped by Zamudin as the pace maker on the
first 5 km.

Judy did her last Panas run. We hope she will keep running in the Dutch dunes
and parks.
Friday 12th September - Garrison Loops
The Garrison loops saw a small hardcore
attendance of 12 people. Some Panas
runners had participated in the
Singapore
ironman70.3 and probably wanted some
rest. Others may just be in for a break at
the start of the new schoolyear or during
the fasting month.

Wan decided not to run this time and was
kind enough to do the timekeeping this
time.

Paul, who had laid the course already had
suspicion that the distance might be
around 4.8 km. The subsequent formal
verdict of the Panas numerator was a
course length of 4.75 km for 1 lap.
We wonder whether the past timetrialists
were that honest! Times shown are the
corrected times (5.3% added).

We see steady performance of Zamudin
and Dollah. Notable also are the times of
Robert, who might be hitting the 19 minute
barrier soon, and Nicole who is improving
her times as well.
Tuesday 14 Oct, Old Camp Course
This Panas classic saw an
impressive turnout. Panas first time
joiner Anna set a good time on the
10 km and Carine and Leon both
did respectable times. One could
imagine Carine being a 5 km
contender with the men.

Mike who participated in a few
leisure runs before joined the time
trial for the first time after break of
several years with a solid 24:04.
Bernhard seems to be making a
career on the 5 km and Zamuddin
is running consistent times on the
10 km. Kelvin is steady and fast
again with 20:18.
Friday 7th November, Norwegians Would
Again we saw an impressive turnout. It seems that the
Panaga area is popular amongs the runners.

For those who might be slightly dissapointed in their
times: we think the course might be 100 m longer. For
the all runners this means you can substract 2%, or
between 24 sec and 36 sec! Times shown are
uncorrrected.

Bernhard is on the way to break the 19 and a half
minutes and in fact already broke it if you adjust the time
for the extra 100 m. Jeremy and Louis did their
consistent times again. Tarmizzi is improving very well.

Panas also welcomed new participants Manuel and Aziz
who made a good impression with their times.
The 28th Panaga Triathlon was held on Sunday 23rd November.  It is an event
in which competitors, compete in three disciplines - swimming, cycling and
running.

As per previous triathlons, the events were: full triathlon (men), full triathlon
(women), full triathlon (mixed team), mini triathlon (men) and mini triathlon
(women).
The full triathlon involved a 500 m pool swim, a 24 km cycle ride and then a 5
km run.  The mini triathlon has a 300 m pool swim, a 16 km cycle and a 2.5 km
run.  For the team event, held over the full distance, one person was doing the
swim, another one doing the cycle, and a third person doing the run with at
least one male and one female in the team.

The weather conditions were excellent although some of the cyclist complained
about the wind. This year the cycle leg was a bit shorter for the Full and a bit
longer for the Mini due to construction activities on the road. Also the run leg
was slightly shortened. The event was complemented with lucky draws and a
breakfast at Panaga Club beach shelter where also the prize giving ceremony
was held.

In total 63 competitors competed, with 29 athletes competing in the full triathlon,
another 11 competing in the mini triathlon and there were 8 mixed teams.  In the
men’s full triathlon places 2 and 3 were only 5 seconds apart. In the Womens’s
full category there were only two competitors. Team RAD consisting of Kelvin
and Rachel Eden realized the fastest overall time of 1:09:17.
In the full triathlon the fastest swim time was 0:06:07 realized by the swimmer of
the EAGLE EYE team, the fastest cycle time was 0:35:55 by Kelvin Eden of the
RAD team and the fastest run time was 0:21:18 by Jan- Willem Verkaik.
In the mini triathlon the fastest swim time was 0:06:13 by Erwinizan B Mugit, the
fastest cycle time was 0:28:49 by Glen Donald and the fastest run time was 0:
10:19 also by Glen Donald.

Special thanks to the Organizing Committee in particular Jaap Erik who not only
managed the whole event but also competed in the swim, Kelvin who despite
his organizing work managed 40 km/h average on the bike leg and ALL
MARSHALS for getting up at 5:30 on Sunday and making the event a
marvelous success.

On the day of the 28th Panaga Triathlon everyone felt a winner.
